Web Hosting is Affordable
Currently you can get a nice chunk of Internet for yourself along with your web site name (www.yoursite.com) for 8 bucks a month (500 Megs with plenty of bandwidth, and emails etc). However, many times you have to buy a year in advance. That comes out to 96 bucks. Depending on your situation, you may not be able to afford that fee (even if you split it with your band members). This is why many bands use geocities or tripod site. Your web site is address is something like this:
http://members.tripod.com/sugardaddies (have fun announcing this from the stage).
When You Can't Afford HostingSo in those cases you can't afford to purchase a hosting package and a domain for a year, an alternative is to use a free hosting service, and purchase your domain (typically about 15 bucks at Dotster or godaddy.com ). This way its easy to announce on stage, and put on flyers.
Once of the services that domain registers offer is the ability to "point" at another web site. You can try this now by going to stageclothes.net,it points back to different pages on another domain of mine (www.jammindave.com. Why did I do this? Well the same way a geocities or tripod domain name does not instill a lot of confidence in someone booking a band, my url of jammindave.com didn't exactly give me credibility either. So now instead of showing your domain as http://members.tripod.com/sugardaddies you can purchase the domain of www.thesugardaddies.com (without the hosting) and have it point at your geocities site. Now the visitor will still find themselves in pop up hell (standard for most free sites), but at least on paper you will look like you have an "official" web site.
I Wouldn't Take My Advice
For the record, I think this way of promotion stinks. Perform a gig, and
take the money and register your domain, and get a web host (I use ipowerweb).
It will save you headaches down the road, and your new site will be pop
up free, with PLENTY of room to put all sorts of pictures, sound clips,
etc on your site. However, I realize that in some cases, you just can't
swing the fee (Which is why I'm showing you this option).
A Cheap Host with Good Customer Service
A host I am currently using is Host Gator. Lots of space, lots of bandwidth,
no problems, and when I called Cusomer Service (before I used them to see
what would happen) a PERSON answered the phone - AMAZING. If you buy a year's
worth of hosting it's dirt cheap. Check them out at
