Today's little communication tidbit will focus on the word YOU in
regards to starting a sentence. If you are upset about something, if at
all possible try to avoid starting the sentence with the word YOU. For
example, "You dumb ass! Can't you remember anything?" Call me crazy,
but this MAY result in a slightly defense retaliation such as "Go to
Hell Moron!" This is not constructive communication.
Instead, try starting the sentence with the word "I". The
above example might be reworded as such: "DUDE! I get frustrated when
you forget what you're playing during my solos. Even if I'm playing in
the correct key, if you're not, it makes my solos sound like crap."
"Man I'm sorry, I was distracted by the girl in the leather pants. I'll
try to concentrate."
Communication is hard as emotions make us want to say the
first thing that pops into our mind (like YOU SUCK!). If communication
were easy, the divorce rate wouldn't be so high. When you're in a band,
it's like being married to multiple partners.
